My Top 10 Anti-Aging Foods, Recipes and Practices

So here is my deal, I am almost 35 years old and have worn a basic sunscreen/ moisturizer on my face everyday since I was 19 years old.  I have a pretty fair complexion, so I have always been cognizant of over-exposure in the sun and really never used tanning beds.  So far, it has been working out pretty well.  However, now that I am approaching middle age (only in body, never in mind) I am thinking more about what kind of facial products I use and what types of nutrients I put on the inside to keep me looking and feeling my best.  I have compiled a list of my favorite foods and recipes that are said to naturally combat the signs of aging along with my favorite tools and products that are scientifically proven to do so.

 1.  Avocado

This luscious, green goddess of a fruit contains monounsaturated fat, which means it is so tiny that it passes through membranes and protects cells from free radical damage and helps your skin stay hydrated.  It improves skin texture and contains 14 grams of fiber, which helps get all those toxins out of our body faster.  I absolutely love anything avocado and have no problem getting it in my diet.  Here are some of my favorite avocado recipes: Chicken Avocado Soup, Chicken, Avocado and Goat Cheese Salad in Endive Cups and of course, My Quick and Easy Guacamole.

2.  Olive Oil

Like the avocado, olive oil is another monounsaturated fat which not only prevent the appearance of new wrinkles, but can also help smooth the ones you have.  It is also packed with vitamins B and D, which help retain the skins moisture and elasticity.  Since literally almost all of my recipes require the use of olive oil, I don't have a problem getting this one in.  Here a couple of my favorites: Roasted Radishes, Chinese Pork and Green Beans and Grilled Romaine Salad.

3.  Salmon

We all have heard that is in our best interest to eat seafood at least twice a week.  It is the best way to get a hearty dose of omega-3 fats in our diet which among many other health benefits,  recent studies have suggested may keep skin cancer cells from growing and spreading.  Here is my go-to salmon recipe: Honey and Soy Glazed Salmon.

4.  Oats

Oats fall into the category of  a "good carb," meaning they are low-glycemic therefore do not spike your blood sugar.  High-glycemic foods, (pasta, bread, rice) spike your blood sugar and are known to cause acne and wrinkles.  The other cool thing about oats is they have natural plant chemical that helps prevent damage to skin cells and can soothe skin irritation.  Try this quick and healthy breakfast as way to get your oats in: Banana and Chia Seed Overnight Oats.

5.  Tomatoes

Tomatoes are basically little vitamin C bombs which helps to build collagen which makes your skin look firmer and plumper.  One of the scariest things I learned recently is that after you turn 30, your stop naturally producing collagen and it needs to be derived elsewhere.  Luckily, I happen to be a big fan of tomatoes.  Here are my favorite tomato recipes: Classic Tomato and Basil Bruschetta and Roasted Garlic and Rosemary Vegetables with Shaved Parmesan.

6.  Berries

Not only are berries packed with vitamins and antioxidants, they offer another way to remove free radical toxins from your skin and body and can promote cell regeneration for new skin.  While blueberries and raspberries are said to be the most impactful, eating any berry is beneficial.  Here is my favorite berry recipe: Strawberry and Arugula Salad with Goat Cheese and Candied Pecans.

7.  Rodan + Fields Amp MD Roller

Full disclosure, I am an Independent Consultant with Rodan + Fields.  This is the skin care line that was created by the dermatologists who created Proactiv acne treatment, otherwise known as the the stuff everyone used to help get them through adolescence.  I absolutely adore the skin care line and one of my must have tools is the Amp MD Roller.  This is wand with over 100 surgical grade needle tips that you roll over your face.  The idea is that you ever so slightly "injure" your skin so when you apply the night serum which contains retinol, it goes directly into your skin and helps produce collagen.  Like we talked about, your body stops producing collagen after the age of 30, which is why our faces loose the elasticity and fullness and the wrinkles begin to show.  The Today Show recently featured this item and said "The Amp MD is an Anti-Aging Must-Have and the Best Spent Minute in Skincare."  This thing is no joke.

8.  Rodan + Fields Acute Care

The older I get, the more I hear about botox and the more my friends are starting to get it.  I am not ruling it out for my future self, but for now, I am all about the Rodan + Fields Acute Care.  These are little strips that you put on a wrinkle or expression lines before bed and they melt peptides and hyaluronic acid directly into the wrinkle and fill it up.  I saw a difference after one time, and became a believer.  Yahoo Beauty named this as the "Number 1 Anti-Aging Product That Is Better Than Botox."

9.  REDEFINE Multi-Function Eye Cream

I am not the only one who is obsessed with this eye-cream as it is currently sold out, after selling out in a matter of hours the day it was re-released.  All of us consultants have a wait-list of clients who want this cream.  It does it all, reduces the appearance of fine lines and crows feet and reduces puffiness and dark circles, (which is my problem).  This stuff is basically a little pot of gold and it is so soothing on the skin.

10.  Red Wine

Oh, do I love my wine.  I love drinking it, cooking with it and learning about all of the different varieties.  One of me and my husbands favorite activities is to go wine tasting at a winery and sample the different kinds before we settle on a bottle.  The fact that red wine has the anti-aging antioxidant Resveratol just gives me more of a reason to drink it.  Resveratol stimulates enzymes that are known to promote DNA repair and cell regeneration.  That is all the information I need to pour another glass and sit back knowing that is helping me fight wrinkles.

What did I miss?  What are some your favorite anti-aging foods and practices?  And, if you have any questions about what Rodan + Fields does or would like a 2 minute skincare consultation, email me here:
This stuff is the real deal created by the two most famous and successful dermatologists in the world, backed by proven scientific research and a 60 day money back guarantee.  I would not be talking about it if I didn't believe in it.  As soon as tried it, I knew I had to start using it and that my friends and family would want to hear about it too.  It's that good!
