My Top 10 Anti-Aging Foods, Recipes and Practices

So here is my deal, I am almost 35 years old and have worn a basic sunscreen/ moisturizer on my face everyday since I was 19 years old.  I have a pretty fair complexion, so I have always been cognizant of over-exposure in the sun and really never used tanning beds.  So far, it has been working out pretty well.  However, now that I am approaching middle age (only in body, never in mind) I am thinking more about what kind of facial products I use and what types of nutrients I put on the inside to keep me looking and feeling my best.  I have compiled a list of my favorite foods and recipes that are said to naturally combat the signs of aging along with my favorite tools and products that are scientifically proven to do so.


 1.  Avocado

This luscious, green goddess of a fruit contains monounsaturated fat, which means it is so tiny that it passes through membranes and protects cells from free radical damage and helps your skin stay hydrated.  It improves skin texture and contains 14 grams of fiber, which helps get all those toxins out of our body faster.  I absolutely love anything avocado and have no problem getting it in my diet.  Here are some of my favorite avocado recipes: Chicken Avocado Soup, Chicken, Avocado and Goat Cheese Salad in Endive Cups and of course, My Quick and Easy Guacamole.

2.  Olive Oil


Like the avocado, olive oil is another monounsaturated fat which not only prevent the appearance of new wrinkles, but can also help smooth the ones you have.  It is also packed with vitamins B and D, which help retain the skins moisture and elasticity.  Since literally almost all of my recipes require the use of olive oil, I don't have a problem getting this one in.  Here a couple of my favorites: Roasted Radishes, Chinese Pork and Green Beans and Grilled Romaine Salad.

3.  Salmon


We all have heard that is in our best interest to eat seafood at least twice a week.  It is the best way to get a hearty dose of omega-3 fats in our diet which among many other health benefits,  recent studies have suggested may keep skin cancer cells from growing and spreading.  Here is my go-to salmon recipe: Honey and Soy Glazed Salmon.

4.  Oats


Oats fall into the category of  a "good carb," meaning they are low-glycemic therefore do not spike your blood sugar.  High-glycemic foods, (pasta, bread, rice) spike your blood sugar and are known to cause acne and wrinkles.  The other cool thing about oats is they have natural plant chemical that helps prevent damage to skin cells and can soothe skin irritation.  Try this quick and healthy breakfast as way to get your oats in: Banana and Chia Seed Overnight Oats.

5.  Tomatoes


Tomatoes are basically little vitamin C bombs which helps to build collagen which makes your skin look firmer and plumper.  One of the scariest things I learned recently is that after you turn 30, your stop naturally producing collagen and it needs to be derived elsewhere.  Luckily, I happen to be a big fan of tomatoes.  Here are my favorite tomato recipes: Classic Tomato and Basil Bruschetta and Roasted Garlic and Rosemary Vegetables with Shaved Parmesan.

6.  Berries


Not only are berries packed with vitamins and antioxidants, they offer another way to remove free radical toxins from your skin and body and can promote cell regeneration for new skin.  While blueberries and raspberries are said to be the most impactful, eating any berry is beneficial.  Here is my favorite berry recipe: Strawberry and Arugula Salad with Goat Cheese and Candied Pecans.

7.  Rodan + Fields Amp MD Roller
